Our verdict

Character AI is still an easy free playground for roleplay, but the company is in Chapter 11 and says the platform will be wound down if no buyer keeps it running. Use the free tier, keep personal details out of your chats, export what you care about and do not prepay for anything.

Roleplay and chat with AI characters

Character AI (written Character.ai by the company and shortened to (c.ai) in its app) is a chat platform where you talk to AI characters: fictional heroes, anime figures, historical people, game masters and plenty invented by other users. It is built for entertainment and roleplay, not for answers or work. The company says millions of people visit every month.

This Character AI review starts with the biggest fact: on October 12, 2026 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to run a court-supervised sale, and it says the platform will be wound down if no buyer keeps it running. The app still works today, so the real question is whether it is worth your time or money right now. We cover that below, along with plans, chat styles, safety and your data.

We did not run long chat sessions for this Character AI review. It rests on the company's own pages and blog posts, including its bankruptcy statement and its plan announcement, plus news summaries of the court case, which we label as reported. If you want a chatbot for writing, research or code, ChatGPT or Claude are better fits, and Questner is a closer match for structured story adventures.

Character AI at a glance

Key Character AI features
FeatureWhat it does
Characters and Chat StylesChat with user-made characters and pick a style such as PipSqueak 3 for roleplay or ShortSqueak for quick, casual texting.
Memory, Lorebook and VoiceMemory pins keep key details in view, Lorebook (in beta) stores world details, and basic Character Voice is free with daily call limits on lower tiers.
Three Plans With Unlimited MessagingFree, (c.ai) lite and c.ai+ all include unlimited messaging, and the paid tiers add premium chat styles, fewer ads and more memory.

What stands out

  • Free and unlimited to startUnlimited messaging stays on every tier, and the two newest chat styles, PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak, are free for everyone with no special limits.
  • A huge range of charactersThe company says there are millions of characters, so most roleplay or fandom ideas already have someone's version waiting.
  • A cheap first paid plan(c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month, removes banner ads, cuts slow mode and adds a daily allowance of premium chats.

What to consider

  • The company is in bankruptcyCharacter.ai says the platform will be wound down if no bid is available, so chats, characters and prepaid time could disappear.
  • Safety and age concernsThe company faces lawsuits and regulators over harm to young users, and the site is a poor choice for children or for emotional support.
  • Your chats are sensitive dataReported concerns from state attorneys general centre on a sale of private conversations, so assume anything you type could change hands.

Character AI Bankruptcy: What Happens Next

On October 12, 2026 the company said it had started a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy case to pursue a court-supervised sale of "all or substantially all" of its assets. Its own statement blames "significant legal, regulatory, and operational headwinds" and says the board chose a sale as the best way to protect value. The line that matters for users is this one: the company hopes the sale produces a bid that keeps the platform running, but if no bid is available, the platform will be wound down.

For now the site works as usual. The company says the platform "remains up and running", that paid subscriptions stay active and that billing is unchanged "for now". It also says it intends to tell subscribers in advance if paid features change, and it expects the sale to finish by the end of November or early December 2026.

The first two dates and the completion estimate come from the company's blog. The hearing, auction and sale dates are reported in news summaries of the court filings, which we could not read ourselves. The same reports say Disney is the opening (stalking horse) bidder at $20 million for a non-exclusive license to certain intellectual property, and that the offer leaves out user data, chat logs and the consumer app. A stalking horse bid is only a floor that other bidders can beat, so it does not decide who ends up with the app.

In practice, nothing breaks today, but any plan that depends on Character AI in 2027 is a gamble. That shapes every part of this Character AI review, from which plan to buy to how much of yourself you put into a chat.

How Character AI Works: Chat Styles, Memory and Voice

You open a character, say hello and the story starts. Most of the quality comes down to the chat style, which is the model behind the replies. The company renames these often, so this table follows its September 2026 announcement.

Chat StyleBuilt ForWho Gets It
PipSqueak 3General roleplay, with smarter replies and better tracking of the chatEveryone, free
ShortSqueakQuick, casual chats with short repliesEveryone, free
LongSqueak and DeepSqueakPremium chat stylesDaily allowance on lite, unlimited on c.ai+
PipSqueak 2 and RawrOlder stylesLegacy menu

New chats start on PipSqueak 3, while existing chats stay on the style you picked. On lite, once your daily premium messages run out, the chat switches back to PipSqueak 3.

Memory, Lorebook and Voice

  • Memory pins: pinned details the character keeps in view. Help-page summaries put the limit at 15 pins on free and 30 on lite and c.ai+, with automated Facts that carry details into new chats on c.ai+ only (reported).
  • Lorebook: a way to store world details for a story. It is still in beta, with advanced features on c.ai+, and the company says PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak are fully compatible with it.
  • Style Control: extra control over how a style writes, for c.ai+ subscribers.
  • Voice: basic Character Voice is free on every plan. Voice calls have a daily cap on free and lite and are unlimited on c.ai+ (reported).
  • Images: in September 2026 the company wrote that it had built its own image models so a character stays recognizable across styles and scenes. We did not test them.

(c.ai) Free vs Lite vs c.ai+ Compared

All three tiers include unlimited messaging. The paid plans mostly remove friction: ads, slow mode and memory limits. (c.ai) lite arrived on September 28, 2026 as a cheaper step below c.ai+.

FeatureFree(c.ai) litec.ai+

Voice callsDaily capDaily capUnlimited

Lite is $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week, with prices varying by region. Weekly billing looks cheap but works out to about $10.79 a month (our arithmetic: $2.49 times 52 weeks, divided by 12), more than double the monthly price, so choose monthly if you subscribe. We could not confirm the current c.ai+ price from an official page. It launched in 2023 at $9.99 a month, so check the price shown in the app before you pay.

The lite price and features come from the company's announcement. Memory pin counts and voice-call limits come from help-page summaries rather than a page we read in full, so treat them as reported.

Safety, Age Limits and the Lawsuits

Character AI has been at the centre of a wider debate about chatbots and young people. Families have sued the company, alleging that its characters harmed teenagers, and regulators in the United States have taken an interest. The company itself lists "legal, regulatory, and operational headwinds" as a reason for the bankruptcy, and news reports say a coalition of 40 state attorneys general has now intervened in the case over data and minors. These are allegations and legal positions, not court findings, and we have not tested the safety tools ourselves.

The company announced in late 2025 that it would end open-ended chat for users under 18. That is its own claim, and age checks on any chat app are hard to enforce. Our advice is plain:

  • Treat characters as fiction. They are text predictors playing a role, not friends, therapists or doctors.
  • Keep real details out. Skip your full name, address, school, workplace, photos and health information.
  • Watch for dependence. If chats start replacing sleep, school, work or real people, take a break.
  • Parents should check. The service is aimed at adults and older teens, so supervise a younger user's accounts and device settings.

If a chat touches on self-harm, or you are struggling, a bot is not the place to get help. In the United States you can call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and the National Institute of Mental Health lists other ways to find help.

Privacy, Your Chats and the Sale

The company says your information remains protected under its Privacy Policy, that its data privacy and security practices are unchanged, and that you can delete your account or export your data in the app or on the website. That is the official position, and we did not read the full policy line by line.

The worry is what a sale could mean. News reports say the Disney opening bid leaves out user data, chat logs and the consumer app, which suggests those would be sold separately or not at all. The same reports say 40 state attorneys general have raised concerns about the sale of sensitive data, including private mental health disclosures and interactions involving minors. Nobody knows yet who will end up with the app or its chat history, so a cautious plan makes sense:

  • Export anything you want to keep now, such as favorite story chats or character definitions you wrote.
  • Delete the account if you have shared anything private and no longer use the app.
  • Do not type anything you would not want a future owner to read.
  • Watch your email for subscriber notices, which the company says it will send before paid features change.

Should You Pay for Character AI Right Now?

The short answer from this Character AI review: pay only for what you will use this month, and nothing further ahead. This table matches common situations to our advice.

SituationOur Advice
Free user who chats now and thenKeep going, and export anything you care about
Thinking about (c.ai) liteChoose monthly, not weekly, and cancel if the service changes
Thinking about c.ai+Confirm the price in the app and avoid paying far ahead
Heavy user with long storiesExport your characters and chats regularly
Parent of a teenagerCheck what they use and talk about how to treat chatbots

Subscriptions remain active and the company says billing is unchanged, but nothing in its statement promises refunds if the service closes. Check the terms in the app before you prepay anything.

Pricing: What to check before subscribing

FreeCasual roleplayUnlimited messaging, PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak, ads shown, 15 memory pins (reported)Check pricing on the Character AI website
(c.ai) liteRegular chatters$4.99 a month or $2.49 a week, varying by region; daily premium chats, fewer ads, less slow modeCheck pricing on the Character AI website
c.ai+Heavy usersUnlimited premium chats, no ads, full memory suite; price not confirmed by usCheck pricing on the Character AI website

The lite price and features come from the company's September 28, 2026 announcement. The c.ai+ price, memory pins and voice limits come from other sources and may change. Weekly billing costs more over time than monthly, and the company is in bankruptcy, so avoid paying far ahead. Check the plan page in the app before you subscribe.

Final verdict

This Character AI review lands in a careful place. As a free roleplay playground, Character AI is still easy to enjoy: unlimited messaging, a huge library of characters and two good new chat styles at no cost. But the company is in Chapter 11, it says the platform will be wound down if nobody buys it, and the surrounding lawsuits and data questions are serious. Use the free tier, keep real details out of your chats, export what you care about and do not prepay for anything. If you want something dependable for work or study, pick a general assistant instead.
