Most SEO teams are not short of software. They are short of time. Keyword research, briefs, drafts, on-page checks, audits, internal links, and now a job nobody budgeted for two years ago: checking whether ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews mention your brand at all. That last shift is why the market for AI tools for SEO looks so different in 2026.
This guide ranks six tools we would genuinely put in front of a team: Semrush, Surfer, Ahrefs, Clearscope, Frase and NeuronWriter. Two are full research suites, three are content optimization tools, and one is a budget pick that does more than its price suggests. All six now sell some form of AI visibility tracking, but at very different depths and prices, so we have spelled out what you actually get.
After the top six, we cover ten more in a few lines each: SE Ranking, Moz Pro, Screaming Frog, MarketMuse, Writesonic, Scalenut, Rank Math, Mangools, Ubersuggest and Search Atlas. They are worth a look if you need a cheaper suite, a WordPress plugin, a crawler or more automation.
Prices come from each company's own pricing page in late October 2026, with secondary sources only where an official figure was missing, and we say so where they disagree. One caveat before you start: no tool can promise rankings or AI citations. The best AI tools for SEO make good work faster. They do not replace knowing your audience.

Semrush
For SEO Teams That Want One SuiteSemrush is the default answer for a reason. If your team wants one login for research, audits, tracking and reporting, it covers more ground than anything else on this list.
Why consider it?
The core is still the classic SEO toolkit: keyword research, competitor analysis, a site audit, rank tracking and backlink data. What has changed is the AI layer on top. Semrush now sells an AI Visibility Toolkit that shows how often your brand appears in AI answers, alongside share of voice tracking, and it folds that into the newer Semrush One bundles. For a team that reports to a marketing director, having classic rankings and AI mentions in the same dashboard saves an awkward spreadsheet every month.
Pricing is where you need care. The official pricing page we read listed the plan names and limits (Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, with 5, 15 and 40 websites to monitor and 500 to 5,000 tracked keywords) but did not show prices in the version we fetched. Secondary sources report the SEO Toolkit Pro at about $139.95 a month, Semrush One Starter at about $199, Pro+ at about $299 and Advanced at about $549, with the standalone AI Visibility Toolkit at about $99 a month. Older articles still quote the retired Guru and Business tiers, so ignore those. Annual billing lowers the monthly rate.
The catch is the classic one: Semrush is broad, and broad gets expensive once you add users and toolkits. A freelancer who only needs content scoring will pay for a lot they never open. For an in-house team or an agency, it is the safest single purchase among AI tools for SEO.
Strengths
- Research, audits, tracking and AI visibility in one place
- Strong keyword and competitor data
- Clear limits per plan for websites and keywords
Considerations
- Gets expensive with extra users and toolkits
- AI features often sit in higher tiers or add-ons
- Prices were not shown on the page version we read
- 02

Surfer
For On-Page Content OptimizationSurfer is the tool writers keep open next to the draft. Its live Content Score tells you, line by line, how your page compares with what already ranks.
Why consider it?
The Content Editor is Surfer's signature feature. You pick a keyword, and it analyses the pages that rank to suggest terms, headings, length and structure, then scores your draft as you type. Surfer says its guidelines draw on more than 500 web and AI signals. The score is a guide, not a target, and chasing 100 can make copy worse. Used sensibly, though, it is the quickest way to stop a good article missing obvious subtopics.
Around it you get Surfy, an AI writing assistant, plus an AI detector and humanizer, one-click optimization and one-click internal linking. The newer piece is the AI Tracker, which monitors prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews and shows mention gaps and brand sentiment.
The official page lists Discovery at $49 a month, Standard at $99 a month billed yearly, a $182 tier and Peace of Mind at $299 with uncapped optimization and API access. A standalone AI tracking plan sits at $82 a month billed yearly, and Surfer says annual billing saves up to 17%. Document limits and the number of tracked prompts rise by tier, so match the plan to how many pages you actually publish.
Strengths
- Live Content Score while you write
- One-click optimization and internal linking
- AI Tracker covers ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews
Considerations
- Easy to over-optimize by chasing the score
- Light on backlink and technical data
- Tracking prompts are limited on lower tiers
- 03

Ahrefs
For Backlink and Competitor ResearchAhrefs is the research tool many SEOs trust most for links. If you need to know why a competitor outranks you, this is usually where the answer starts.
Why consider it?
Ahrefs runs what it calls the world's second-most active crawler, and that shows in its backlink index, Site Explorer and competitive analysis. Every paid plan includes a site audit, rank tracker, web analytics and, notably, API and MCP access, so you can pull Ahrefs data straight into an AI assistant or your own scripts. Standard adds Content Explorer, Brand Radar and batch analysis, which matter for content and digital PR teams.
On the AI side, every plan now includes checks on AI prompts: 150 on Lite, 300 on Standard and 600 on Advanced. A Content Kit add-on, listed from $99 a month, was marked as coming soon when we checked.
The official prices are Lite at $129 a month, Standard at $249, Advanced at $449 and Enterprise at $1,499 with an annual commitment. Each plan includes one user, and extra users cost $40, $60 or $80 a month depending on the tier, which is the number to watch for teams. Annual billing saves up to 17%. Site owners on a budget should also look at the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites they can verify.
Strengths
- Excellent backlink and competitor data
- API and MCP access on every paid plan
- AI prompt checks included in every plan
Considerations
- Extra users add a lot to the bill
- Content features are thinner than Surfer or Clearscope
- Enterprise needs an annual commitment
- 04

Clearscope
For Editorial Teams With Many WritersClearscope is the calm, well-made option for content teams. It does less than the big suites, but what it does it does cleanly, and every plan has unlimited users.
Why consider it?
Clearscope grades your content against the search intent and language patterns behind a query, then shows which terms and topics you are missing. Editors like it because the recommendations are readable and the interface is simple enough for freelancers to learn in a day. Unlimited users and projects on every plan is the standout detail, because it means you can bring in every writer and editor without counting seats.
The AI side is built in rather than bolted on. Every plan includes query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini, brand visibility tracking and what Clearscope calls query fan-out awareness: the background web searches an AI platform runs before it writes an answer, which you can use to plan content that earns a mention.
The official pricing is Essentials at $129 a month with 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 Discoveries and 20 Drafts, and Business at $399 a month with 300 queries and pages and a dedicated account manager. Enterprise is custom. There is a 14-day free trial and no contract. The limits are the trade-off: 50 pages fills up quickly for a busy team, and extra pages are an add-on.
Strengths
- Unlimited users and projects on every plan
- Clear, editor-friendly recommendations
- ChatGPT and Gemini query tracking included
Considerations
- Page and draft limits are tight on Essentials
- No backlink or technical audit tools
- Pricier per page than NeuronWriter
- 05

Frase
For Briefs and Automated Content OpsFrase has changed the most of any tool here. It started as a brief builder and now pitches itself as an agent that researches, drafts, publishes and repairs content for you.
Why consider it?
The workflow is a loop. Frase studies what ranks, drafts and optimizes a piece in your voice, publishes it to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, Wix or its own FraseCMS, then scores your existing pages for SEO, GEO and AI visibility. Content Guard watches live pages for ranking or traffic decay and writes the fix, which only goes live once you approve it unless you opt in to automatic fixes. For teams with a big back catalogue, that refresh work is where most of the value sits.
Frase also runs an MCP server and CLI on every plan, so you can drive it from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or a terminal. If your team already writes with Claude, that is a genuinely useful bridge between research and drafting.
The official prices are Starter at $39 a month billed yearly or $49 monthly (1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles), Professional at $103 yearly or $129 monthly (3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles) and Scale at $239 yearly or $299 monthly (5 seats, 10 domains). Extra seats are $29 a month. There is a 7-day free trial with no card. Pay-as-you-go overages are off by default, which we like, because Starter simply stops at its limit rather than sending a surprise bill.
Strengths
- Research, drafting, publishing and refreshes in one loop
- MCP server and CLI on every plan
- No-card trial and no surprise overages by default
Considerations
- Auto-publishing needs careful review settings
- Article limits are low on Starter
- Less research depth than Semrush or Ahrefs
- 06

NeuronWriter
For Freelancers and Small Teams on a BudgetNeuronWriter is the tool we recommend when the budget is small but the content still has to compete. It covers the core of content optimization for a fraction of the price of the bigger names.
Why consider it?
Like Surfer and Clearscope, NeuronWriter uses NLP term recommendations drawn from the pages that rank, plus a content planner, AI templates and AI credits for drafting. It also tracks a small number of AI-monitored questions per plan, from 5 on Bronze to 20 on Diamond, and an add-on extends that to more models. It is less polished than Surfer, and the interface takes a little getting used to, but the recommendations are solid.
The pricing is what earns it a place. Bronze is $23 a month (2 projects, 25 documents), Silver $45, Gold $69, Platinum $93 and Diamond $117, with yearly billing worth about two months free. Gold is the sweet spot for small teams, because it adds unlimited team members, plagiarism checks, Google Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations, your own OpenAI key, and API and MCP access.
You can test it free for 7 days on Gold terms, and NeuronWriter offers a refund on your first plan within 30 days. For a freelancer comparing budget AI tools for SEO, it is the obvious first trial.
Strengths
- Very low entry price
- Unlimited team members from Gold
- API, MCP and integrations on Gold and up
Considerations
- Interface is less polished
- Low document limits on Bronze
- Few AI-monitored questions per plan
- 07

SE Ranking
For Agencies That Want a Cheaper SuiteSE Ranking gives you most of what Semrush does for noticeably less, which is why agencies keep switching to it.
Why consider it?
Core covers rank tracking, site audits, backlink research and 100 AI prompts tracked daily across five LLMs, plus API and MCP access. It costs $129 a month, or $103.20 billed yearly, and the 14-day trial is fully working, so you can test it on a real client site. The bigger plans add more keywords and seats, but the extras add up quickly. Its databases are smaller than Semrush or Ahrefs, which shows most in backlink and competitor research. For rank tracking and reporting it holds up well, and it is the first suite we would trial after the big two.
Strengths
- Daily AI prompt tracking on Core
- Strong value for agencies
Considerations
- Extra seats and keywords add up
- Smaller databases than Semrush or Ahrefs
- 08

Moz Pro
For Small Businesses Learning SEOMoz Pro is the friendly suite, and its Domain Authority metric is still an industry reference that clients and vendors quote.
Why consider it?
Standard includes 300 tracked keywords, 150 tracked AI prompts across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and two AI Content Briefs a month. It is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, with one user. The interface explains what each report means, which makes it a good first suite for a small business owner who is learning SEO as they go. The trade-off is depth: prompts are checked weekly rather than daily, and Standard allows only one user, so growing teams tend to outgrow it and move up a tier or to a bigger suite.
Strengths
- Easy to learn
- AI prompt tracking on every plan
Considerations
- Prompts are tracked weekly, not daily
- Only one user on Standard
- 09

Screaming Frog SEO Spider
For Technical SEO AuditsScreaming Frog is the crawler almost every technical SEO keeps installed, and it has quietly become an AI tool too.
Why consider it?
It finds broken links, redirects, duplicate content and schema errors on any site you point it at. It can now crawl with OpenAI and Gemini to write alt text, summarize pages or classify them at scale, running your prompt on every URL it fetches. The free version crawls 500 URLs, which is enough for a small site, and a licence is £199 per user a year. It is a desktop app with plenty of settings, so expect a learning curve. It also gives you no keyword or rank data, so pair it with a research tool.
Strengths
- Free for small sites
- AI prompts run on every crawled page
Considerations
- Desktop app with a learning curve
- No keyword or rank data
- 10

MarketMuse
For Content Strategy and Topical AuthorityMarketMuse looks at your whole site rather than one keyword at a time, which suits teams planning content in bulk.
Why consider it?
Its topic modeling builds a content inventory and shows a personalized difficulty score, so you know which topics your site can realistically win and where you already have authority. That makes it more of a planning tool than a writing assistant. A free plan gives 10 queries a month, enough to try it on one topic cluster, but paid tiers did not show public prices when we checked, so expect to talk to sales. For a small blog that is probably more tool than you need. For a large content library it is worth a look.
Strengths
- Site-level content planning
- Personalized difficulty scores
Considerations
- Paid prices not public
- Overkill for small blogs
- 11

Writesonic
For Brands Focused on AI SearchWritesonic has moved from AI writer to AI search visibility platform, and that shift is the reason to consider it now.
Why consider it?
Starter tracks 50 prompts daily across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and adds 15 AI articles and 10 site audits a month. It costs $79 a month billed yearly, and you can start free without a card. Having tracking, drafting and audits in one plan is handy for a brand that wants to see where it is missing from AI answers and then publish content to fix it. Sentiment analysis needs the Growth plan at $399, and Starter is limited to one user, so teams outgrow it quickly.
Strengths
- Daily AI visibility tracking
- Content and audits in the same plan
Considerations
- Sentiment analysis needs Growth at $399
- One user on Starter
- 12

Scalenut
For Small Teams Producing ContentScalenut combines keyword clustering with AI drafting at a modest price, aimed at small content teams.
Why consider it?
Starter covers GEO article creation, optimization of existing pages, keyword clusters and tracking in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. It is $59 a month billed monthly, and annual plans were heavily discounted when we checked. The workflow is straightforward: cluster your keywords, draft the article, then optimize it against what ranks. Article limits on Starter are low, and the promotional pricing changes often, so check the current price before you commit. Plus adds auto-publishing, which helps if you ship content on a schedule.
Strengths
- Clustering and writing in one tool
- Auto-publishing on Plus
Considerations
- Low article limits on Starter
- Promotional pricing changes often
- 13

Rank Math
For WordPress SitesRank Math is the on-page SEO plugin of choice for many WordPress sites, and the free version goes a long way.
Why consider it?
The free plugin handles sitemaps, schema and on-page checks inside the editor. PRO adds a rank tracker, AI Link Genius for internal link suggestions and an AI search traffic tracker. PRO starts at €7.99 a month billed yearly, with a 30-day money-back guarantee, which makes it the cheapest paid option on this list. It only works on WordPress, and Content AI is a separate subscription, so budget for that if you want drafting help. For a WordPress blogger it is the easiest first install.
Strengths
- Generous free version
- Very cheap PRO plan
Considerations
- WordPress only
- Content AI is a separate subscription
- 14

Mangools
For Beginners and BloggersMangools keeps keyword research simple, and its KWFinder tool is pleasant to use, especially for beginners.
Why consider it?
You get KWFinder, a SERP checker, a backlink checker and rank tracking in a clean interface that needs no training. The pricing page did not load prices for us, so we rely on reports of about $29.90 a month billed yearly for the entry plan. It is a good fit for a blogger or solo consultant who wants research without the complexity of a full suite. AI features are light and the data is smaller than the big suites, so agencies and large sites will want something heavier.
Strengths
- Very easy to learn
- Low entry price
Considerations
- Light AI features
- Smaller data than the big suites
- 15

Ubersuggest
For Budget SEO and AI TrackingUbersuggest is one of the cheapest ways to get SEO and AI visibility data together.
Why consider it?
Paid plans track your brand in ChatGPT and Gemini alongside keyword research, audits, backlinks and rank tracking, and an MCP link lets Claude pull your data. The site does not list prices openly, but reports put the Individual plan at about $29 a month, with a lifetime option for the core tools. That lifetime deal is unusual in this market and appeals to freelancers who dislike subscriptions. There is no white-label reporting, so agencies will need another tool, and the 7-day trial asks for a card.
Strengths
- Low price for SEO plus AI tracking
- Lifetime option for core tools
Considerations
- No white-label reporting
- Card needed for the 7-day trial
- 16

Search Atlas
For Agencies Automating On-Page FixesSearch Atlas pitches automation more aggressively than anyone else on this list.
Why consider it?
Its OTTO agent applies technical and on-page fixes for you, next to content, local SEO and publishing tools. Starter is $99 a month billed monthly, but AI visibility tracking only starts on the Growth plan. The pitch is time saved: instead of exporting an audit and handing tickets to a developer, you approve changes and the agent makes them. That is also the risk, so review automated edits before they go live on important pages. White-label options on Pro make it attractive to agencies.
Strengths
- Applies fixes instead of only reporting
- White-label options on Pro
Considerations
- No AI visibility on Starter
- Automated changes need careful review

A few things to check before you buy:
- Seats change the maths. Ahrefs charges $40 to $80 a month per extra user, while Clearscope and NeuronWriter Gold include unlimited users.
- AI tracking has its own limits. Tracked prompts, queries and questions vary widely, from 5 on NeuronWriter Bronze to 600 checks on Ahrefs Advanced.
- Annual billing saves money. Surfer and Ahrefs quote up to 17%, Frase 20%, and NeuronWriter about two months free.
- Old prices linger online. Semrush's retired Guru and Business tiers still appear in many articles.
How to Choose the Right AI SEO Tool for Your Team
- Decide what is missing. If you lack research data, buy a suite. If you have data but weak pages, buy a content optimizer.
- Count your writers. Per-seat pricing hurts large content teams, so unlimited-user plans can be the better deal.
- Check your publishing volume. Page, document and article limits matter more than headline prices.
- Ask how you will report AI visibility. If leadership wants AI mentions next to rankings, keep both in one tool.
- Run the same test in each trial. Optimize one real page in every tool and compare the advice.
| Your situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| In-house SEO team with one budget | Semrush | Research, audits and AI visibility together |
| Content team publishing weekly | Surfer or Clearscope | Strong on-page guidance for writers |
| Link building and digital PR | Ahrefs | Best backlink and competitor data |
| Large site with ageing content | Frase | Content Guard catches decaying pages |
| Freelancer or small agency | NeuronWriter | Low price, unlimited users from Gold |
AI SEO Tools for Brand Visibility in ChatGPT
Tracking whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews mention your brand is now a standard feature, and it is the fastest-growing part of AI tools for SEO. The basic idea is the same everywhere: you pick a set of prompts that real buyers might type, the tool runs them on a schedule, and it reports when you are mentioned, cited or missing.
The differences are in depth. Semrush and Surfer treat it as a full module with sentiment and share of voice. Ahrefs includes a fixed number of prompt checks in every plan. Clearscope adds query fan-out data, which shows the web searches an AI model runs before it answers. Frase and NeuronWriter cover fewer prompts but at a lower price. Remember that AI answers change from one run to the next, so look at trends over weeks rather than a single result.
Best AI Tools for Programmatic SEO
Programmatic SEO means building many pages from a template and a dataset, such as one page per city or per integration. None of the six tools is a page generator on its own, but several help. Ahrefs, Frase and NeuronWriter Gold and up offer API or MCP access, so you can feed keyword data and content scores into your own build scripts. Frase can also draft and publish at volume on its higher plans.
Claude + Vercel: Our Pick for Building Programmatic Pages
If you want to build the pages yourself, the pairing we like most is Claude and Vercel. Claude, especially through Claude Code, is very good at writing the actual site: a Next.js page template, the script that turns your spreadsheet or API data into page records, internal links between related pages, and the sitemap. It can also write the short unique intro for each page from the data you give it. Vercel then hosts the site and handles the scale side. Next.js on Vercel can pre-render thousands of pages at build time or generate them on first visit and cache them, so new rows in your dataset become new, fast-loading pages without a rebuild of the whole site.
A typical setup looks like this:
- Dataset: one row per page (city, integration, product), with real numbers or facts in every row.
- Claude: builds the template, the data pipeline and the per-page copy, and checks that pages are not near-duplicates.
- Vercel: deploys every push, serves pages from its CDN and regenerates cached pages when the data changes.
- SEO tool: Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking to pick the keyword pattern and track how the page set ranks.
The risk is scale without value. Thousands of near-identical pages are exactly what search engines try to filter out, so make sure each page has unique, useful data before you generate it. A general assistant like ChatGPT is handy for writing the template copy too, but the dataset is what makes programmatic pages worth indexing.
AI SEO Tools Suitable for Agencies
Agencies care about three things: many clients, many seats and reports a client can read. Semrush and Ahrefs handle multiple projects well and are what most clients already recognise. Frase Scale covers up to 10 domains with client-ready reports, and its Enterprise plan adds white-label reports and a branded client portal. Clearscope's unlimited users suit agencies with large freelancer pools, and NeuronWriter Diamond covers 50 projects for $117 a month, which is hard to beat on cost per client.
A Simple Workflow for SEO Teams Using AI
- Research in a suite. Use Semrush or Ahrefs to find the keywords, gaps and competitors worth your time.
- Build the brief. Turn the target query into an outline with a content optimizer such as Surfer, Clearscope, Frase or NeuronWriter.
- Write with a human in charge. Use AI for a first draft or sections, then add real experience, examples and data.
- Optimize, do not stuff. Cover the missing topics the tool flags, but stop before the copy reads like a list of keywords.
- Track both kinds of search. Watch rankings and AI mentions together for at least a few weeks.
- Refresh what slips. Revisit pages that lose traffic before writing new ones.
If your team also produces marketing copy, our guides to the best AI writing tools and the best AI tools for ad copy cover the drafting side in more depth.
What Google Says About AI Content
Google does not ban AI-written content. It looks at whether a page is helpful, original and made for people rather than for rankings. Its guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content is free and worth reading for everyone on your team. In practice, that means using AI tools for SEO to speed up research and structure, while people supply the experience, judgement and fact-checking that make a page worth ranking.

Make sure each page has unique, useful data before you publish it at scale.
Are there AI SEO tools suitable for agencies?
Yes. Semrush and Ahrefs handle many client projects, Frase Scale covers up to 10 domains with client-ready reports, and NeuronWriter Diamond covers 50 projects for $117 a month.
Which AI SEO tools track brand visibility in ChatGPT?
All six now offer some form of it. Semrush has an AI Visibility Toolkit, Surfer has an AI Tracker, Ahrefs includes AI prompt checks, Clearscope tracks queries in ChatGPT and Gemini, and Frase and NeuronWriter monitor a smaller set of prompts.
What are the best AI tools for website SEO on a budget?
NeuronWriter starts at $23 a month and Frase Starter at $39 a month billed yearly. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you can verify and is a useful companion for audits.
Is AI-generated content bad for SEO?
Not by itself. Google judges whether content is helpful and original, not how it was produced. Thin pages made at scale to chase rankings are the problem, so keep a human editor in charge of every page.
Do I need both Semrush and Surfer?
Many teams use one research suite and one content optimizer, because they do different jobs. If budget is tight, start with the tool that fixes your biggest gap, research data or page quality.
